4th EAS conference on maritime security cooperation 2020 held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
The fourth East Asia Summit(EAS) Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation held in Chennai,Tamil Nadu.

  • The conference will mainly focus on co-operation in maritime security and challenges in maritime domain.

BBIN Nations deliberated on MoU to implement Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA)
A meeting of the BBIN nations — Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal held to deliberate on a proposed MoU for implementation of the motor vehicle agreement for regulation of passenger, personal and cargo vehicular traffic among the countries.

  • The meeting discussed on cargo and protocols to regulate passenger and cargo services. attended the meeting as an observatory nation.

1st Hornbill festival celebrated in Tripura
Taking a cue from Nagaland’s world famous annual Hornbill Festival, Tripura government for the first time to hold two-day Hornbill Festival with twin goal – conservation of the striking forest bird “Hornbill” and to boost the livelihood of the people through tourism.

  • Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated the state’s first-ever Hornbill Festival at the famous Barmura hill (in western Tripura), one of the biggest hill ranges of Tripura, which was last month renamed as Hathai Kotor, or ‘big hill’ in the tribal language ‘Kokborok’.

Kiren Rijiju announces lifelong monthly pension for athletes under ‘Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons’ scheme
Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced lifelong monthly pension for athletes under the ‘Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons’ scheme.

  • This is for the information of all the concerned sportspersons: Lifelong monthly pension for medal winners in international events under ‘Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons’ scheme.
  • At present, 627 sportspersons are getting lifelong monthly pension ranging from Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000 under the scheme.

National Institute of Financial Management to be renamed after Arun Jaitely’s name
The Government of India (GoI) has decided to rename the National Institute of Financial Management (NIFM), Faridabad as Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM).

  • NIFM, Faridabad was set up in 1993 as a registered society under Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, GoI with the mandate to train officers of various Finance and Accounts Services recruited by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through the Civil Services Examination as also officers of Indian Cost Accounts Service (ICoAS).

Kaamya Karthikeyan becomes youngest girl to climb Mt Aconcagua
A 12 year old, Mumbai girl Kaamya Karthikeyan is the youngest in the world to climb South America’s highest peak. She becomes the youngest girl to summit 6,962 metres tall Mt Aconcagua, the highest peak outside Asia.

  • Karthikeyan went on top of the Argentinian mountain peak and hoisted the tricolour.

ITF women’s tennis event 2020: India’s Ankita Raina wins 18th career doubles title
India’s best woman singles player Ankita Raina won her first ITF singles title of the season and 10th of her career when she beat Chloe Paquet in the summit clash of the $25000 event in Nonthaburi, Thailand

  • Ankita also won the doubles title with Dutch partner Bibiane Schoofs.

Armand Duplantis breaks Pole Vault World Record
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, a 20-year-old Swede raised in Louisiana, broke a six-year-old record in the pole vault at an indoor meet in Torun, Poland.

  • Duplantis, has been in choosing his fiberglass poles, broke the world record in the pole vault on with a jump of 20 feet 2 ¾ inches, or 6.17 meters

Lalremsiami, Vivek Sagar named as FIH’s Rising Stars of the Year
India’s Vivek Sagar and Lalremsiami in Switzerland were named as the FIH’s men’s and women’s Rising Stars of the Year respectively.

  • Midfielder Vivek won the accolade ahead of Argentina’s Maico Casella and Blake Govers of Australia, who finished second and third respectively.
  • On the other hand, the 19-year-old Lalremsiami took the prize ahead of Argentina’s Julieta Jankunas and Frederique Matla of the Netherlands, who finished second and third respectively.

Prasar Bharati Chairman Surya Prakash gets retired
India’s public service broadcaster Prasar Bharati chairman A Surya Prakash retired from his position, ending his two-term long journey that started in 2014.

  • Prakash, a former journalist, has authored two books–What Ails Indian Parliament and The Emergency-Indian Democracy’s Darkest Hour.

The International Olympic Committee selects Gopichand for the Lifetime Award
Chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand has received an honourable mention in the male category of the prestigious 2019 International Olympic Committee’s Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of role he played in the development of the game in the country.

  • Gopichand received the honourable mention for the male category of the awards. The legendary coach is the first Indian to receive this honour.

Infosys to acquire Simplus, strengthens presence across US and Australia
Digital services and consulting leader Infosys has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Simplus, one of the fastest growing Salesforce platinum partners in the United States and Australia.

  • The acquisition coupled with acquisition of Fluido announced in September 2018.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Indian Army & Private firm developed the World’s Cheapest Gun Shot Locator “Parth”
Parth” gun shot locator device developed by the Army’s College of Military Engineering jointly with a private firm costs much cheaper than the imported ones.

  • The device costs around Rs 3 lakhs, and if inducted, would replace a similar imported item which costs around Rs 65 lakhs.

Iran unveils new ballistic missile ‘Raad-500’
Iran unveiled a new tactical ballistic missile designated the Raad-500 (“Thunder”). Iranian state media claims the missile is constructed with lightweight composite materials, weighing half of the preceding Fateh-110 system. 

  • The missile is additionally thought to feature a range of 500 km and an accuracy of 30 m CEP.


OBITUARIES

Padma Shri awardee Giriraj Kishore passed away
PicsWell-known Hindi novelist and Padma Shri awardee Giriraj Kishore passed away in Kanpur, following a cardiac arrest at his residence. He was 83 years.

  • Giriraj Kishore was best known for his novel ”Pehla Girmitiya” that was based on Mahatma Gandhi”s stay in South Africa. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India and was the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award. He was also conferred the Vyas Samman in 2000.
